Symantec and MX Logic Announce Managed Email Defense Service

Cupertino, CA & Denver, CO – Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the global leader in information security and MX Logic, Inc., a leading provider of innovative email defense solutions that ensure email protection and security, today announced a managed email defense service, which enables businesses to reduce bandwidth and storage costs, requires no additional hardware or software outlays and allows for service activation within one business day.

Integrating Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0 with the MX Logic Email Defense Service provides comprehensive managed email security at the network perimeter and delivers industry-leading spam detection accuracy. The solution is now available through MX Logic’s sales channels as part of two MX Logic Email Defense Service packages—MX Ultimate Defense SM and MX Critical Defense SM.

“We strongly believe that a layered approach to spam protection can bring significant accuracy benefits,” said David Ferris, president and senior analyst, Ferris Research.

Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0 combats spam using multiple filters that include non-English language filters, reputation filtering, signatures, and URL filters, and is backed by Symantec’s Probe Network of over two million spam traps in 20 countries.

Symantec’s Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0 is the leading solution in the market and includes statistical filtering, reputation analysis, proprietary heuristics, industry heuristics, URL filtering and reputation-based real-time black hole lists. MX Logic ®’s Stacked Classification Framework, now including Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam, is a multi-layered spam detection system that combines powerful spam-fighting techniques to successfully block spam and minimize false positives by leveraging a sophisticated end-user quarantine. Working within the Framework, these multiple spam filters deliver industry-leading spam detection by separately assessing and “voting” on the probability that a specific email is spam.

“Companies looking for relief from the ever-increasing spam volume can now leverage the combined spam detection accuracy of Symantec and MX Logic as a managed service” said Enrique Salem, senior vice president, gateway solutions, Symantec. “We are pleased to be working with MX Logic to offer this solution to the market.”

Providing instant relief from spam, viruses and worms and other email threats before they can harm a corporate network, the MX Logic ® Email Defense Service with Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0 can be purchased in two packages, MX Critical Defense SM and MX Ultimate Defense SM. Both packages include: e mail attack protection, fraud protection, content and attachment filtering, triple virus and worm scanning, inbound message filtering and sophisticated email threat quarantine for administrators and end users. The MX Ultimate Defense service package also includes outbound message filtering and the MX Logic FailSafe SM Disaster Recovery Service that provides complete back-up protection for business email servers in the event of an outage or malfunction.

“In today’s world of constantly evolving email threats and ever increasing spam volume, companies of all sizes are clamoring for solutions that integrate best-of-breed, robust email protection,” said John Street, chief executive officer, MX Logic. “By joining the best in managed email defense service with leading global anti-spam technology, Symantec and MX Logic are answering this need.”

Spam, worms, viruses and other email threats are increasingly taking a toll on corporate inboxes. Ferris Research estimates that in 2003, the total cost of spam to U.S. businesses in lost productivity was $10 billion.

Service Benefits

By incorporating Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam 6.0 technology into the MX Logic Email Defense Service, customers can benefit from:

•A truly global network view of email traffic, offering customers more powerful protection from spam and increased efficiencies in overall email threat protection. By leveraging Symantec’s Probe Network, the combined solution enables MX Logic to more accurately determine the reputation of email senders worldwide and to identify and block spam.

•Highly aggressive and accurate spam filtering without the risk of false positives because suspect messages are quarantined—not blocked. The MX Logic Email Defense Service offers sophisticated spam quarantine management, including end-user quarantine management which allows employees to review the messages identified as spam and further define the quarantine rules to meet their specific needs. Employees can simply and quickly delete, forward, always allow, or always deny the messages contained in the report, ensuring that legitimate email is never blocked.

•Enhanced identification, filtering and quarantining of non-English language spam. Symantec estimates between 10 percent and 20 percent of all global spam is non-English, making non-English spam a critical issue for any company, especially in countries where English is not the primary language.

•The most up-to-date threat information gathered from the Symantec Brightmail Logistics and Operations Centers (BLOC) with locations in San Francisco, Dublin, Sydney and Taipei and the MX Logic ® Threat Center, together processing millions of messages per day.
